There’s no question of doubt that preparing for and anticipating a job interview is the most stressful part of the job search process. But it doesn’t have to be like that with a little careful research and interview preparation beforehand. Believe me, I’ve had interviews that felt more like interrogations than simple question and answer sessions and this was all because I made those all too common Job Interview Mistakes.

So, you may well be wondering what these so called Job Interview Mistakes are and more importantly how to avoid these errors in the first place. After all, you want to experience a pleasant formal discussion instead of a seeming cross-examination right? Well, it’s not rocket science, and with some simple groundwork prior to the event, you may even look forward to your interview questions and answers session with relative confidence.

Although there are a million and one job interview mistakes that anyone can make at any given time during the interview process, there are 5 major blunders that many folks make which are totally avoidable once you know what they are.  See below for details:

1. Research the Company: If you do nothing else have at least a little background knowledge of the local firm or multinational company that you are applying to. Remember, there are usually many applicants after a single vacancy, so you will not get a second chance to make a first impression here. Such background research should entail things like what does the company do specifically, who are their main rivals and so on. Failure to acquire a few basic facts or stats will dramatically reduce you chances of impressing your interviewer(s).

2. Know what you are applying for: I have really slipped up here in the past. It is so important to be familiar with the job description. Inevitably you will be asked why you think you are suitable for the position on offer, and you will need to be able to draw on your past experiences, your talents, and of course your strengths and abilities in order to connect with the firms specific needs. In other words, highlight to them why you are suited to that job in particular. Remember, interview questions are only difficult if you haven’t prepared for you answers.

3. Market yourself correctly: This is easier than it sounds providing once again, if you prepare beforehand. It is most likely that your curriculum vitae (CV) and cover letter got you on the short list in the first place. Remember what’s in your resume and the contents of your cover letter, as you’ll most likely be asked about them. Simply define yourself when asked and tell your interviewers why you think you are different and therefore better suited that other applicants. Don’t forget to highlight your major strengths and accomplishments, when asked, but without sounding over confident or boastful.

4. Ask meaningful questions: Not asking meaningful questions is one of the all too common job interview mistakes made by so many. It doesn’t matter what occupation, trade, profession, or career you’re applying for, whether it menial employment, or a high ranking post in a multinational company, the interviewer will inevitably ask you at some point if you have any questions. Don’t overdo it but have at least 3 or 4 intelligent questions to ask the recruiter. It’s ok to have them written down in advance and reference them at an appropriate time. It shows you’ve prepared and will leave a lasting impression.

5. Be mindful of dress code: We live in a world that’s becoming all the more laid back and informal, and that includes the workplace. Many companies have a dress-down day allocated to each week. Understand what the position requires from the applicant specifically, and prepare to tell why you think you are best suited for the role. Have a few significant questions at your disposal and be well dressed for the occasion. Lighten up, maintain eye contact throughout (without staring!), and speak clearly.
